Tips to Keep Your Hand Skin Healthy After Handwashing

Although it’s getting more regular to wash your hands, these strategies will help prevent your skin from being dry and chapped. As thorough handwashing can get germs away but it can also harm the skin. Washing in warm water will protect your hands from getting cold, rather than wet. Blotting hands instead of drying can prevent abrasions from forming. When palms are severely chapped, washing hands should be considered instead of using hand sanitizers. Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the transmission of infections. As we keep on washing hands more frequently than usual, skincare experts share tips that can help keep your skin healthy. 1. Wash hands with warm water To wash hands for at least 20 seconds with Soap/Hand wash and water. Be sure to cover palms, backs of hands, fingers, in between fingers, wrists, and fingernails. And lukewarm water is best rather than using hot water. Very hot water will eventually dry out your skin furthermore, causing acute dryness and itching. Always remember that nothing strips of natural oils from the skin than using hot water does. 2. Use moisturizing soaps/hand washes Most soaps strip the skin and cause them to be dry and cracked, so it’s a good idea to use hand washes or Soaps that get the job done while moisturizing your hands at the same time. Opt for soaps or Hand washes with a creamy formula, you can also look out for soaps with ingredients such as glycerine and lanolin. Do try to avoid harsh soap bars, as they tend to dry out skin the most. The binders or fillers used to hold a bar of soap together naturally have a high pH, which will cause unnecessary dryness. Instead, choose liquid soaps since they are generally less drying to the skin. Also note that no matter what type of soap you are using, try not to be too aggressive while cleaning your hands. Try to be as gentle as you can be to your skin while washing. 3. Apply moisturizer Applying even a light layer of moisturizing cream can help battle the problem of dry or rough skin as frequent or over-washing could result in dry hands. To prevent this from happening, be sure to immediately apply hand cream/moisturizer afterward… Doctors also recommend using creams or ointments instead of lotions, which is claimed to contain too much water content and thus don’t allow to leave the skin surface. So it’s highly recommended to use a moisturizer after every washing, and before bed, and also whenever you feel dry. 4. Wear gloves Apart from applying a moisturizer to damp skin after washing, it is always a good idea to soak your hands in plain water for 5 minutes, then apply a moisturizer, and wear a pair of gloves for 1 to 2 hours. As this ensures that the all skin surface gets moisture where it needs due to heat and moisture trapped in the skin while wearing gloves. For extremely chapped hands, always use a heavy moisturizer on hands like a thick cream and wear cotton gloves overnight. Wearing gloves overnight with heavy moisturizers accelerates the skin healing process. 5. Use skin balm If you suffer from severe skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis and find your dry skin is becoming increasingly drier, raw, or cracked due to frequent handwashing washing, the best option is a skin balm such as Vaseline and applying it directly onto sores or cracked areas of your hands Also, you can use this anywhere on your body where your skin is more heavily dried than usual. This soothes the drier areas and prevents further damage. 6. Substitute Hand Sanitizer for Liquid Hand Soap It’s suggested that we use a hand sanitizer every time we come in contact with germs, but its best to limit its use only at places where handwashing with soap and water is a big deal. When at places where water and soap are easily available, dumping your hand sanitizer is the best bet. As a good quality Hand sanitizer will always be high on the alcohol content, it best to avoid it wherever possible, by washing hands with soap and water as high alcohol dries out skin very badly. 7. Blot dry When drying your hands, always blot, don’t wipe your hands or rub your skin with your towel to prevent micro-abrasions (damage) on the skin. For this always stick to use of soft quality cotton towels and each person in a home should have their towel and they should be replaced with clean ones every 3 days. Make sure hands are thoroughly dried, as germs are more easily transferred on wet hands or use Paper towels if you can.
